• Part 1 - What had happened recently in Charlie's life that makes him depressed and sad in the beginning of the book? His friend Michael had just died
• Part 1 - Why did Charlie's father slap him? He asked Aunt Helen too many personal questions about her life.
• Part 1 - What does Charlie tell us about the kid named Sean? That Sean was a bully who threatened him to make a 'swirl' in the toilet, meaning flush his head in the toilet. Charlie had learned fighting from his brother. When Sean went onto him, he beat him up. Sean started it and it was self-defence.
• Part 1 - Who are the people in Charlie's family and where do they live? Charlie, his older sister, his mother and father live together. Charlie also has an older brother who recently moved to Pennsylvania to play football in college.
• Part 1 - What is Charlie's family like? .
• Part 2 - What happened when Charlie's sister and her boyfriend were watching a film? (p.12-13) Charlie's sister provoked her boyfriend in telling him that he didn't stand up for himself like other people. He eventually slapped her across her face and she went quiet.
• Part 2 - Why do people call Patrick "Nothing"? When he replied to his bullies in school "You can call me Patrick or nothing" they started calling him "Nothing".
• Part 2 - What is the relationship between Sam and Patrick? Why did Charlie think that was a good thing? They are siblings (stepsister and stepbrother). Charlie thought that was good because he thinks that Sam is beautiful wants to take her on a date.
• Part 3 - Give two examples of how Charlie has "participated" in part 3 He went to a party and he went to watch football with his new friends.
• Part 3 - Why was Charlie in the same room with the couple making out at his brother's party? (p.32) He was ordered to stay in there for the party. He was too young to participate.
• Part 3 - Where were Charlie's parents at the time of the party? (p.32) They were either at a funeral or wedding. He can't remember.
• Part 3 - Why does Sam think it is a bad idea to tell someone about the rape Charlie witnessed? (p.35) There will be a large process. Often that is very hard on the victim especially because they were still going out and in love. Who would believe it?
• Part 3 - What did Charlie want to do to the guy who raped the girl and what did he do instead? (p.35-) He wanted to punch him. Instead he let the air out of his tires so that he couldn't drive his car.
• Part 3 - What happened to Charlie at the party he went to with Sam and Patrick? (p.37) He was offered a brownie which contained drugs.
• Part 3 - What did Charlie want to eat or drink? (p.38) A milkshake
• Part 3 - Why does Brad not want anyone to know about him and Patrick making out together? (p.39-40) He is scared.
• Part 3 - What did Sam do when they were driving after the school dance and how did Charlie feel about it? (p.42) She stood up in the back of the car as they drove through the tunnel. Charlie felt 'infinite'.
• Part 4 - What did Charlie like about the day he describes on p.45? The air felt like a warm bath.
